We Believe
The Churches mission is first and foremost the worship of God the Holy Trinity; Now the Catholic Faith is this; that we worship one God in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity; Neither confusing the Persons, nor dividing the Substance. Since its founding in the Comox Valley, the Parish of S. John the Divine has existed primarily for the worship of God the Holy Trinity, the highest activity a human being can undertake. The standard for our services is The Book of Common Prayer (Canada, 1962), the distinctive heritage of Anglicans. The Prayer Book’s stately language reminds us not only of our history, but also of the exalted deity we worship. Secondly, the Church exists for man’s salvation as it is discovered in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, who said to his disciples, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. It is by Christ’s example revealed in Holy Scripture, interpreted through reason, and tested against the voice of the Church that we grow in faith and holiness of life. Thirdly, the Church exists as a charity for fellowship and strength through the power of God’s Holy Spirit. At St. John the Divine we strive to express this fellowship in three principal areas of our life together: as a community of Christian faith and prayer, as a community of growing friendship, and as a community where people feel safe and can have fun together. As members of this congregation we hope to attract more young families and newly located retires into our life as a parish. Our aim is to further create a context, in which Christian character can grow and develop, especially in our young people. Over the next 3-5 years we hope to make some modifications to both our programming and to our buildings in order to facilitate a healthy and safe environment for our membership and the larger community of
Courtenay.
